St. Thomas Episcopal Church

Katrina Recovery

St. Thomas was fortunate to escape the tidal surge that completely destroyed six Episcopal churches on the Gulf Coast, as well an many churches of other denominations.  We did, however, suffer some wind damage that was repaired.  An example of this devastating force of nature is apparent in the before and after pictures of one of our sister churches, Christ Episcopal Church, in Bay St. Louis at http://members.tripod.com/4christe/4christe.

Within days after the storm St. Thomas served as the principal collection and distribution point for clothing in Hancock County.  Thereafter, as volunteers from other areas came to the coast to help with recovery, we offered temporary housing for student groups and young people as they worked during the day.

Even though twenty-five percent of our members lost their homes during the storm, and many moved away, we are rebuilding our congregation and helping others in the community to do the same.
